Spring has sprung and with it the urge to clean and de-clutter. But I am not limiting it to dresser drawers and closets, I am taking on the daunting task of de-cluttering my laptop and other electronics. This effort, which is part of my continued participation in Trend Micro’s Digital Joneses Study, a year-long project that brings together bloggers and their families  to “examine issues affecting individual members of a modern, digitally-connected household”, is helping to do more than just get me organized and keep my systems from clogging, it is also helping to improve my online safety measures.

I have a lot to do, and it is not an easy task to take on, in part because I let it sit for so long unattended. One of the biggest challenges is keeping track, and compiling my online passwords, as well as developing a more organized way to keep track of their usage. But it doesn’t stop there. I need to also review my social media networks and really assess the people who are connected to me and have access to the information I share, like say, in my Facebook page. Yikes!

But, better now than never and lucky for us (if you are like me), Trend Micro offers some helpful tips to get us started:

  • Clear your browser’s cache.
  • Uninstall programs you don’t even use.
  • Regularly empty the Recycle Bin and Temporary Internet Files folder.
  • Avoid hoarding programs.

But, that is just the beginning.

I recommend reading Trend Micro’s Putting An End to Digital Clutter for more tips and other things to be aware of and get a fresh start this spring!

Disclosure: As part of my agreement to participate in the Digital Joneses Project, Trend Micro has provided me with technology and software items for use in the various challenges and/or for review. No request that I express any particular point of view or specific editorial requirements to be included in my reviews were made. All opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
