Setting Sail on the Celebrity Summit

Celebrity Cruises Summit

With its distinctive sleek white hull, blue details and bold X, Celebrity Cruises’ Fleet makes its mark. When in port, it’s hard not to miss the Celebrity Summit which calls Cape Liberty Cruise Port in Bayonne, NJ home. Built in 2001, the Celebrity Summit is the third vessel in the Millennium class. In January 2012, the ship underwent an extensive refurbishment to add Solstice-class features. Most of the public spaces reflect the refurb, such as new carpeting and decor. The Celebrity Summit’s “Solsticized” features include Aqua Class staterooms and the Blu Restaurant. As a tech fanatic, I’m particularly interested in checking out the Celebrity iLounge—an Apple mecca at sea and another Solstice addition.

It looks as though my oceanview stateroom will be on deck two. Having cruised several times for work, I’ve always stayed on a higher deck, so I’m interested to compare the differences. And speaking of differences, I spent many years covering the commercial maritime industry, including cruise ships. Since I spent many years covering the trade and technical aspect of ships, I’m quite excited to get a glimpse of cruising from a different perspective.

Our week-long cruise sails to Bermuda and will be docked for three days at King’s Wharf. I’m looking forward to exploring the beaches and photographing the colorful architecture.

As with any trip, I had quite a bit of paperwork to get in order, including expediting a renewal for my passport. One aspect of preparation that was somewhat easy: the online registration. Celebrity Cruises’ online registration interface was easy-to-use and straight forward. A caveat since the site uses flash: I can’t access my reservation information on my phone while on the go. I also noticed that my name was misspelled and was directed to customer service to fix the oversight. After the name mishap and customer service kerfluffle, the spelling of my name was fixed. As I finish packing for the cruise and getting the family ready for my absence, hopefully, things will be smooth sailing from here—quite literally.

Disclosure: Celebrity Cruises is hosting a guest and me on this week-long cruise. To facilitate this review, the cruiseline will be providing internet access. All opinions are my own.
