One of the places that I have continuously returned to over the years and still manage to find something new is at the Finger Lakes, NY.

It’s about a 5-hour drive from my New Jersey home, but a wonderful escape that feels a world away from my everyday life. My family has gone with me over the years, but I think on this last trip the area really managed to carve a special place in my kids’ heart, so much so that they didn’t want to leave.

What I have come to love about the destination is not just the beautiful outdoor experiences one can have there, but also the community. Whether I am spending time with a farmer working at a local orchard or winery, or with an artist in residence at the Corning Museum of Glass, that sense of pride and community that I feel every time I am there is the thing that makes us feel so welcomed, so at home, and so in love with this place.

The Finger Lakes as a Foodie Destination

If you are in NYC, or close enough to it, you might actually believe that you have no need to travel too far to taste the best of the best. But the truth is a lot of the best of what NYers enjoy in their favorite city restaurants come from upstate, and when it comes to a farm-to-table experience, there is no better place to be. Many restaurants and chefs work with their local farmers, often their closest neighbors, to deliver and create the many seasonal dishes I enjoy with each visit there.

Fall Road Trippin’ to the Finger Lakes

Sometimes one just needs to get away.

These past couple of months I have been home working and dealing with all the fun of getting the kids acclimated to school and schedules and routines. In between, my days have been consumed with work and emails and deadlines.

At the end of the day, when kids are in bed, my husband and I are left with very little to give each other other than warm cuddles on the couch in front of the television falling asleep to polar bears on the Discovering Channel. After a few weeks of this, one starts to feel a little older, a little less exciting, a shadow of who we used to be a few years before.

Fitness Travel: Interview with Leslee Schenk Trzcinski of Tune Yoga at Finger Lakes, NY

When Carol took me with her to the Finger Lakes last month for a girlfriend weekend get-away, one of the things we wanted to emphasize was being physically active while we were there. I am an avid gym rat and personal trainer in-training, and Carol and I have shared workouts on many occasions. Our Finger Lakes host, AJ, came through big time by arranging hiking, kayaking, cycling, and what was the absolute fitness high point of the weekend: lakeside yoga taught by Tune Yoga owner Leslee Schenk Trzcinski. I’ve been practicing yoga for over 15 years, and this was one of the best yoga experiences I have ever had. Leslee herself has a very interesting story and is the go-to person for Finger Lakes yoga and cycling, both. I decided to interview her about her fitness philosophy and what she has to offer Finger Lakes visitors, and here’s what she had to say:

Indulging the Foodie at Finger Lakes

I recently wrote about my girlfriend getaway to the Finger Lakes – where we had a wonderful time – and now I wanted to highlight the few places where we ate.

I have been told that Finger Lakes has quite a food scene going on, and I would have to say that based on just the few places I tried, they truly have something great going on.

There’s a lot of respect and consideration for the local farmer and purveyor of food, and the Upstate New York region has a lot to offer the foodie wanting to vacation in there. They also host an annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival (July 13-15 in 2012), and other culinary events that bring together chefs, experts and food lovers from all over.

In my trip, I got to check out individual eateries and locations that are must-sees when visiting.

Weekend Getaway to the Finger Lakes

I recently spent three days dining on delicious food, enjoying soft pastel color sunsets over serene lakes, hiking through lush green trails and prairies. No. I wasn’t in Europe, or even the West coast. I was in Upstate NY, only 5 hours out of NYC enjoying some of what the Finger Lakes area has to offer guests who visit there.

This recent trip was a wonderful reminder of the beauty NY state holds and an even more important reminder that wonderful destinations don’t have to be so far from home.

The first time I heard about the Finger Lakes  in upstate New York was while sipping on one of their delicious red wines and laughing it up with one of their lovely tourism representatives – the ladies are indeed lovely, but the wine definitely helped bring on the laughter.

At first I thought it was no more than just a lovely wine area with its over 100 world class wineries, making it the country’s top wine producing regions known for its Rieslings, Gewurztraminer and Ice Wine.

Grilling with Chefs at JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes, FL

If you’ve been reading my site long enough then you know that when it comes to cooking it up with chefs I am in heaven. Whether it be cooking demos with chefs from the Virgin Islands or cooking school with chef from Italy, I am happy to watch, learn, cook and taste away.

So of course it makes sense that during my recent family visit to Orlando, FL I would sneak away for a few hours to take participate in a grilling class hosted by the JW Marriott Orlando’s Griffin Cooking School and led by their Executive Chef Chris Brown and Sous Chef Monica Noda of Citron. Class at the Griffin School are led by diverse group of chefs that currently prepare the food at the resorts many restaurants – and for the price of these class, that level of access and wisdom is something not to be missed.

Family Weekend in Corning, NY

The last time I traveled to the Finger Lakes was on a foodie road trip with my girlfriends. It was the dead of winter and we drove through a blizzard most of the time. But I have been to the Finger Lakes before, and have enjoyed my experiences there and when the weather is not so cold, it can be a lovely place to enjoy the outdoors and all the different areas have to offer.

This time around, I wanted to experience the area during the fall with my family. The colors come alive sooner up North than they do closer to the city, and I just couldn’t resist checking it out.

Weekend Getaway to Cortland, NY

Nestled in upstate New York, just 30 minutes outside of my old stomping grounds of Syracuse (go Orange!), lays the quaint, historic city of Cortland. A winter ski destination and close in proximity to the wineries of the Finger Lakes, it was the perfect little weekend getaway for a fun father/daughter road trip.
