A Weekend at Camp Shock Top

If there is any rite of passage as a kid, besides braces and the incredibly awkward preteen years, it’s sleepaway camp. Bonfires, s’mores, first crushes, cabin pranks, trumpet wake up calls. At least this is what I envisioned camp to be. As a kid I never went to camp. My dad says he and my mom loved me too much to send me away. Haha. But really my house during the summer months was a camp in itself. Always packed with friends and activities. We would take days trips to the beach and hang out in our backyard treehouse. I can’t say I really missed out on the quintessential camp experience. But when I was given the chance to go, as an adult (with unlimited booze), I just couldn’t say no.

There are a lot of promises we make to ourselves about how we want the new year to evolve. What can we add, take away, improve on.

For some of us, one of these promises is to be a better friend. It’s something I always strive for too and like to compliment with either nights out for dinner together or, even better, with little retreats somewhere fun.

Experiencing a citizenM NYC Hotel Stay

There was just no way that my husband and I were going to take on the new school year without rebooting.

No. Way.

So we did what we always do when we need to get in touch with our more romantic, more fun selves. We left our kids for a night away in New York City.

We chose to escaped to the new citizenM hotel in Times Square, which opened only recently this past April 2014. The hotel may be new to Times Square but it isn’t new overseas, with a strong presence in Europe and with plans to expand around the world.

Things are getting a little busy here in the Cain household and all this snow hasn’t really helped much. My husband and I pride ourselves in taking time away together, but life has gotten in the way as of late.

That’s why on the one free weekend we managed to put aside for ourselves, we decided to take a short road trip to Hudson Valley for an overnight retreat. Lucky for us, it was also the warmest weekend in a long time. We ventured to Rhinebeck, NY.

The Finger Lakes as a Foodie Destination

If you are in NYC, or close enough to it, you might actually believe that you have no need to travel too far to taste the best of the best. But the truth is a lot of the best of what NYers enjoy in their favorite city restaurants come from upstate, and when it comes to a farm-to-table experience, there is no better place to be. Many restaurants and chefs work with their local farmers, often their closest neighbors, to deliver and create the many seasonal dishes I enjoy with each visit there.

Weekend Getaway to the Finger Lakes

I recently spent three days dining on delicious food, enjoying soft pastel color sunsets over serene lakes, hiking through lush green trails and prairies. No. I wasn’t in Europe, or even the West coast. I was in Upstate NY, only 5 hours out of NYC enjoying some of what the Finger Lakes area has to offer guests who visit there.

This recent trip was a wonderful reminder of the beauty NY state holds and an even more important reminder that wonderful destinations don’t have to be so far from home.

Walking The Fashion District in NYC

The history of the Fashion District, or Garment District, in NYC has always been one of the most overlooked by visitors when in the city, in my opinion. Walking the streets from 7th to 9th avenue, and 34th to 42nd st, one would never imagine that in many of those buildings are housed some of the largest fashion labels and studios of the world, as well as their warehouses, production facilities and offices.

Adventures Galore at Finger Lakes, New York

The first time I heard about the Finger Lakes  in upstate New York was while sipping on one of their delicious red wines and laughing it up with one of their lovely tourism representatives – the ladies are indeed lovely, but the wine definitely helped bring on the laughter.

At first I thought it was no more than just a lovely wine area with its over 100 world class wineries, making it the country’s top wine producing regions known for its Rieslings, Gewurztraminer and Ice Wine.
