For those of us on the East Coast a trip to Mexico for a long weekend seems like a crazy idea. But, this is exactly what my family and I did. We headed out to Puerto Vallarta, on behalf of Expedia to try the new services being offered to travelers by Expedia Local Expert.

This new feature allows those booking their travel through Expedia to also plan and book their activities before they even arrive to their destination.

A Recovered Los Cabos – Hacienda Encantada

Los Cabos – Beauty, Warmth and Fun at Hacienda Encantada

I don’t live that far from Mexico – a few hours’ drive and I could be over the California border. During the last few years we’ve heard all sorts of terrible things happening to our neighbor country. Between the violence and devastating Hurricane Odile, it just hasn’t been on the top of my list to visit. And that’s a shame really. Mexico has given me much joy for many, many years – from cheap party weekends in college, communing with wildlife while camping along Baja, surfing trips on the Sea of Cortez, to romantic getaways in its resorts. That’s a lot of joy.

Rebooting at Canyon Ranch Resort and Spa

This year has already been intense, and it’s only been month one.

I am pretty happy, I have to say. New house, some really exciting trips coming up, preparing for a kid in college, and really wonderful and rewarding partnerships. But I started the year stressed over many of those thing as well and was hit hard by the flu (managed to close on a house and move into it with said flu), and was beginning to feel like maybe I had pushed myself a little too hard.

When Canyon Ranch Resort and Spa in Lenox, MA invited me to spend a weekend with them (full disclosure) and check our their resort and amenities, I wasn’t sure if I could. Physically, I felt exhausted and weak, and emotionally, I felt overwhelmed and vulnerable.

The Love Boat. If you say those words to anyone over the age of 35, more than likely they’ll belt the tune from the hit TV show right back atcha. Of course, only one line. Does anyone really know the rest of the song?

Fall Road Trip Through The Mohawk Trail in The Berkshires, MA

The Mohawk Trail, a route that the Native Americans used to trade with Atlantic, Upstate New York, and other tribes, turns 100 years old. Today it is known as Massachusetts Route 2 and it is one of the most scenic drives you can take in the East Coast, especially during the fall. The peak for foliage season is between the first and second week of October and I had to take the 3.5 hour drive from New Jersey to photograph it.

I was able to convince my darling friend Corine of ComplicatedMama.com to join me on this fun day trip. We left at 4:30AM and arrived to Williamstown, MA just as the town itself was waking up.

Experiencing a citizenM NYC Hotel Stay

There was just no way that my husband and I were going to take on the new school year without rebooting.

No. Way.

So we did what we always do when we need to get in touch with our more romantic, more fun selves. We left our kids for a night away in New York City.

We chose to escaped to the new citizenM hotel in Times Square, which opened only recently this past April 2014. The hotel may be new to Times Square but it isn’t new overseas, with a strong presence in Europe and with plans to expand around the world.

Bordeaux from the river on a Uniworld Cruise

I recently went on my very first river cruise as the guest of Uniworld Cruises. This cruise took me back to my favorite French city, Bordeaux, where I was able to visit some places I fell in love with during my previous visit to the region.

I was traveling on my own, a strange experience in an environment where most travelers are there as couples or families. And unlike the bigger cruise ships, these cruises are less crowded, making the entire experience even more intimate.

We sailed on the River Royale and set off from Bordeaux on an 8-day excursions to wineries, chateaus, and villages in and around Pauillac, Blaye, Bergerac, Saint-Emilion, Cadillac, and back to Bordeaux.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect. Cruising, as I have experienced on bigger ships has been fun, but not always my favorite experience. River cruising is a bit different from the cruise ship experience…and a luxury river cruise, such as the one I was on, was unlike anything I imagined.

Mountain Trek: A Retreat for the Body and Soul

I have always believed in the inspirational power of travel. From the colorful streets of coastal Jacmel in Haiti, to the quiet isolation of a residential canal in Venice, to the mirrored reflections of Central Park in New York City – my inner muse finds nourishment in lands near and far. But it was not until I experienced one week at Mountain Trek  – a luxury fitness retreat and health spa – in British Columbia, that I truly knew what it to find true inspiration.

Maybe it was the daily sunrise yoga. Maybe it was delicious meal after meal of action packed foods. Maybe it was the rush of the snow melt turning small creeks into raging rivers along the hiking trail. Whatever it was – I discovered fuel for my inner and outer self.

Taking an RV Vacation

The first time I ever took an RV vacation was when I was about 6 years old. My father, mother, and I ventured from New York City to Florida. You would think I wouldn’t remember that trip, but there are a few things about it that I have never forgotten.

Like watching the sunsets during the long drives my dad would insist on. Or my frustration that our little black and white, portable television couldn’t get good enough reception for my favorite shows (though today, you can easily find an RV with an updated, fully functional color television set). I remember liking my bunk bed in the RV and my mom making food in the kitchen.

I always thought it interesting that my parents chose to travel with an RV. They weren’t really outdoorsy people who camped or hiked. But as newly minted American citizens, an RV road trip was as American as apple pie and they wanted every piece of it.

My second RV trip was with a group of 5 other women, two of which I knew and three whom I’ve never met before.

Six women in an RV for 8 nights together. What could go wrong?
