Howl at The Moon in NYC: A Night to Remember

On any given weeknight after work you can find me unwinding at home, eating dinner from my favorite Mexican food truck and cuddling up in front of a good movie (or two) with my pups. Pajamas on, Netflix streaming. It’s my very own sanctuary from the craziness that can come from living in New York City. But every once in a while, when the timing is just right, I’ve been known to dress up, put on a little makeup and go out on the town with my favorite girls. Last Thursday happened to be one of those nights.

When Carol first told me about the opening night of Howl At The Moon I was not sure what to expect. Midtown Manhattan isn’t necessarily known for it’s nightlife but I was curious enough to accept the offer. From my initial Google search I learned that the venue is “Part bar. Part concert. All fun.” Count me in.

It was a wonderful surprise getting the news that I got some love on television the other day.

Nubia Duvall Wilson, traveler and author of Encounters with Strangers in New York City and Beyond, was interviewed on Arise 360, where she gave tips on where to travel for Spring break, shared what her favorite destinations are, and, when asked what her travel blogs she likes to read, she said Girl Gone Travel!

Recently, I announced my partnership with Cricket Wireless in their “Ask The Experts” series to discuss traveling on a budget. After answering several questions from my readers, I am now co-hosting a bilingual Twitter chat on the subject along with Nicole Diaz of The Funthusiast. Meet us on Twitter on Thursday, March 6, 1pm CST/2pm EST. The hashtag is in Spanish (#CharlaCricket which translates to Cricket Chat), but the conversation will be in both English and Spanish, so even if you only speak English, I invite you to join in and ask or share anything about traveling on a budget. Cricket Wireless will be giving away some fun prizes!

The Joy of Giving Back

During my travels I try to point out to my kids the areas outside of our lovely hotels and comfortable stays that represent the reality of many of the people who live and work in the places we visit – not as something to feel sorry for or stare at, but as something to be aware of and remember when they look at their comfortable life.

Not having a lot at times in my life really helped to give me a good sense of the world and of myself. I enjoy the things I have more. I appreciate every detail that helped to reward our work and offer us the life we have, not just in material things, but in the affection and warmth of our family.

Romantic Beach Getaways: The CheapCaribbean.com Twitter Party

Right now, at chez moi, we are all about family travel. We are planning a few trips with kids in tow and though we are very excited about all of it, my husband and I are also starting to look at the possibility of a romantic beach getaway because the truth is, after all that family fun, he and I will need a little time to recharge!

I know, I know. The idea of a romantic getaway when you have kids seems like an impossibility – though, if you have been reading my site for a while you know that I am a big advocate for parents finding the time to travel without the kids every once in a while (read: Planning a Trip Without Kids in Tow).

I have been highlighting beaches and boardwalks along the East Coast for those looking for ways to take a quick day – or weekend trip – not too far from home.

But, if you are wanting to go big on your romantic beach escape, then I thought it might be a good time to dust off a few of the romantic beach getaways that I have featured on the site, to not only give you some ideas of where to go, but also to remind you that you deserve it!

Travel Outside The Box: Adventures with Kids in Tow

I often rave about my family road trips and travel because it is while on those trips that I get to see a new side to my kids each time: an adventurous, crazy curious, incredibly fearless side that I don’t  get to see on a regular basis.

Ask me if there are any places where I wouldn’t take my children, and aside from a war-ridden destination, there aren’t many places I could name. And that is because once we stepped outside the box – and really we have been stepping out of the box, albeit little by little, for years  – of what people consider “family places”, once our children pushed us to trust them and allow them to be more than just “travelers” but also adventurers, once we decided to take on the world unafraid, well, it seems there’s nowhere we wouldn’t go together.

Guests who want to get a close view of the Statue of Liberty before opening day can enjoy one of the 20 daily tours being offered by  Statue Cruises.

Hollywood Preps for The Oscars!

I wasn’t really all crazy for the Oscars, which are being televised from Hollywood, CA tomorrow Sunday, February 24. But, when I went over to CA for a project and stayed in the Loews right next to the Dolby Theatre (formerly Kodak), I got sucked in the excitement of it all as I witnessed the set up taking place for the celebration during my stay.

Crowds of press representatives lined up in one of the hotel’s adjacent lobbies to check-in and pick up their press badges, lines and lines of security walked through to scout the halls and all the surrounding area. Tourists stopped, stared, and took pictures of the spots which in just a few hours will be filled with celebrities.

Times Square hosted its annual Vow Renewal Ceremony 2013 on the red steps yesterday, while Aruba Tourism hosted the reception on a pop-up beach, complete with sand, warmth, and lounge chairs.

The day was one of the first where New Yorkers, though still somewhat cold, got a hint of Spring in the air. Times Square was alive with couples from all over signing up to exchange vows they had once before shared with each other.
