Visiting a Dairy Farm in New York

Last fall I was invited by the American Diary Association & Dairy Council (ADADC) to learn about and visit local New York state dairy farmers. This visit was an important one for me because during the time of my visit there was a lot of talk going on online and in the news about farming practices and ways in which animals were treated and fed. As a parent, I have been working on making changes in my home to improve the quality of the foods and products that I feed my family.

In saying this however, I realize that having the choice is, in and of itself, a luxury. The truth is that, despite what advocates for organic and non-processed foods say, eating “healthier” in this country is expensive. It is a luxury – both in access and in affordability – that not many families can afford.

I know.

Favorite Apple & Pumpkin Picking Spots in NY & NJ

‘Tis the season for apple and pumpkin picking! Are you as giddy as we are yet?

I wanted to list all of the orchards and farms that we have discovered over the years, places that have been the most fun, the most kid friendly, and which have helped to create a beautiful experience for us. Some are in NY, some are in NJ. Except for Pumpkinville in Toano, VA, which we came across on a weekend trip to Colonial Williamsburg (not to be confused with Pumpkinville in Great Valley, NY, which is also a blast!)

Visiting farms is a favorite pass time this time of year for us, and as the kids get older our list continues to grow! We will be adding more to this list, so make sure you bookmark it and keep checking back!

My absolute favorite thing to do almost immediately after Thanksgiving is head out to a Christmas tree farm with my entire crew to cut down our tree.

We prefer to cut our own when we can, so it is one of the options we look for when deciding what farm we will visit. We also really enjoy discovering new places. So, since starting this blog (almost 3 years ago!) here is the list of places we have discovered and shared so far (except for 2010 when we ran out of time and just bought it in our NYC neighborhood.

Apple Picking Fun in Riamede Farm in Chester, NJ

It’s that time of the year! This year we discovered a new place to go pumpkin picking in Toano, VA at Pumpkinville and instead of venturing upstate like we have in the past, we decided to discover apple picking in New Jersey.

Honestly, as I started writing this post, I realized that I have failed you in delivering the images of what Chester, NJ is looking like today. Even if you have picked your apples for the season, it’s still worth a drive there. It is just breathtakingly beautiful, bursting of colors with little hidden creeks and lakes throughout, I was so busy admiring it all that I forgot to take pictures to share with you all here. Blogger fail.
