Celebrating The Find: West Coast Hotels

It’s hard when traveling to keep track of all the places you enjoyed long enough to come home and then write about them.

When we took our road trip this summer, I tried really hard to make sure that I covered a lot of the places that made us smile and that I would love to mention to you, but alas…it’s taken me a bit to get around to them all.

In addition to the places I have already written about, here are some other spots, especially some really great lodging spots that we reserved before our trip, have never stayed at before, and walked away feeling like we would definitely want to return.

Here at home we are knee deep into fall celebrations and preparations. Birthdays, Halloween, and yes, even Thanksgiving. It’s nice to be home, planning for the afternoons of apple pie baking and evenings cuddled next to the fire place or by the fire pit outside telling stories. A great part of the stories we share however, will be about the incredible adventures we had this summer, from the visits to the beach to the cruise along the Mediterranean, it has been needless to say a traveling family’s dream summer. On the top of the list is our summer road trip, much of which I have already covered in various posts but wanted to share in one more way with you. I put together a 3 and some minute compilation of our journey and like all my posts, I am hoping this one will inspire you to take on your own adventure next summer too.

I have been sharing all the fun we had during our 2013 summer road trip adventure and of course, in the process, how much we enjoyed our Yukon Denali with OnStar features (check out Our Road Trip Experience with GMC and OnStar). We just love road trips, and this one was no different. We find them so rewarding and exciting.

Now, I want to share some of that excitement through a Twitter chat with OnStar, who along with co-hosts Jen Miner of The Vacation Gals and Mara Gorman of Mother of All Trips, will be discussing road trip adventures, tips, info, and more.

A Birthday in Disneyland, CA

One of the highlights of our 2013 summer road trip for my kids was where we were ending it: at Disneyland Resort. It was here that we chose to celebrate our middle son’s 8th birthday. He waited two and a half weeks on the road for this moment and what resulted was a solid smile from the moment we arrived that lasted pretty much all day.

One of the things we knew going into Disneyland was that it was going to be a smaller park to explore. With 160 acres, as opposed to Disney World’s 30,000, we were confident that our one-day park hopper would get us through most of the Disneyland Resort area.

Where Would You Go?

During my visit to Seattle, I came upon a traveler’s paradise: the Metsker Maps of Seattle store.

My husband, children, and I all looked at each other with excitement in our eyes.

As I admired the many maps from all over the world, a question kept floating around in my head: Where would you go?

Taking it Easy in San Francisco, CA

Of course during our 2013 road trip, we had to stop in San Francisco, but by the time we got there we wanted nothing more than to take it slow, keep the activities to a bare minimum, and try simply to enjoy the sites without forcing ourselves into traffic – which as far as West Coast traffic goes, started in San Francisco for us. We felt it immediately as we tried to maneuver our Yukon Denali through the busy city streets. The public transportation system is supposed to be really good in San Fran, everyone told us so, but without really know where to get buses, how long the waits for them were, and not really wanted to deal with the traffic and crowds, we just didn’t even try.

Yes. We were that tired.

Our Road Trip Experience with GMC and OnStar

There are many things that made our West Coast road trip so much fun, but one of the things that really allowed us to enjoy ourselves, and the road was the comfort and confidence we had in our GMC Yukon Denali luxury SUV. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from OnStar, we drove the vehicle from Seattle to Los Angeles completely content with our reliable, and pretty massive ride.

A Sunny Day in Portland, OR

Of all the cities we had planned during our road trip, Portland, OR was one that I was most excited about. I had never been, but envisioned cool, hip city surrounded by the lush, green environment of Oregon state. I have to confess, some of my excitement was further enhanced by one of my favorite TV shows, Portlandia, and I hoped that it would be all the quirky awesome of the show.

Two Days in Seattle, WA

The first stop on our summer road trip adventure was Seattle, WA. We only had two days and we meant to make the most of our time in this fun city.

We set ourselves up at the Residence Inn by Marriott Lake Union, quite possibly one of the largest Residence Inn I’ve ever stayed in. It was also convenient, located across the street from the marina of Lake Union; a great spot to grab a drink, dinner, and watch the sunset. If you can score one of the rooms with a balcony overlooking the lake, do it. Right down the street was a stop for the Seattle street car, an inexpensive and quick way to commute to most attractions.
