There are a lot of promises we make to ourselves about how we want the new year to evolve. What can we add, take away, improve on.

For some of us, one of these promises is to be a better friend. It’s something I always strive for too and like to compliment with either nights out for dinner together or, even better, with little retreats somewhere fun.

The Adirondacks has become a favorite place for my family and I to visit. A few times we’ve bitten the bullet and driven the 5.5 hours there on a Friday afternoon, just to get as far away as we could from the hustle and bustle of the city. Even the little ones look forward to the escapes to the mountains and have enjoyed our few trips out to places like Tupper Lake and Lake Placid. And the area has been a huge draw for many other families looking to escape as well.

It is a favorite retreat for ski bunnies and snow loving families during the Winter months. But it is equally fun and beautiful to visit during the warmer months as well. This past weekend my family and I visited one of the most popular resorts in the Lake Placid area, Whiteface Lodge.

On our recent visit to The Adirondacks, we made a stop at The Wild Center, the Natural History Museum of the area. It was a beautiful Saturday and the sun was shining bright. Normally on days like these the last thing you want to do is be inside, but the museum is designed in such a beautiful way that you can enjoy all it has to offer, while still being surrounded by sunlight. From the moment we entered the museum we were greeted with continued sunlight coming in through the awesome windows of the Great Hall and by a cheerful and helpful volunteer who provided us with maps and a list of events for the day.

Big Tupper, Tupper Lake, NY

This past weekend the family and I headed out to The Adirondacks in Upstate New York to check out an interesting story about a community that has done some amazing things for itself.

I recently wrote about how in 1999 the Big Tupper ski resort was forced to close due to shifts in demand which led to the inability to financially sustain the mountain for skiers. It is clear, even still, that the town began to suffer, businesses close, houses on the market as people left town, and so forth.  However, those who remained, many of them members of the community for generations, decided to come together and re-open the resort. From retirees to high schoolers, this town joined forces, volunteered their time, and donated their money to clear about 30 slopes on Mount Morris, about 3130 feet in elevation. In a 4-month period in 2009, they managed to make the mountain re-usuable.
