Right now I am home preparing for the holidays with my family. We like to spend them here. With New York City as our playground, we enjoy all the lights and scenes.

However, once all the festivities are over, we start feeling the urge to get out there for some winter fun, and boy have we had some over the years.

Here is a collection of some of my favorite winter escapes to help inspire your next trip:

Weekend Getaway to Cortland, NY

Nestled in upstate New York, just 30 minutes outside of my old stomping grounds of Syracuse (go Orange!), lays the quaint, historic city of Cortland. A winter ski destination and close in proximity to the wineries of the Finger Lakes, it was the perfect little weekend getaway for a fun father/daughter road trip.

Fall Weekend Cruising the Hudson

Last year my family and I got up early on a Sunday morning to take a cruise up the Hudson River in celebration of Oktoberfest. Granted, I am not a huge beer drinker and tend to not consume much alcohol when I am on an outing with my kids, but visiting Bear Mountain and taking in the views along the river as the foliage changes colors has become a family favorite.

Family Weekend in Corning, NY

The last time I traveled to the Finger Lakes was on a foodie road trip with my girlfriends. It was the dead of winter and we drove through a blizzard most of the time. But I have been to the Finger Lakes before, and have enjoyed my experiences there and when the weather is not so cold, it can be a lovely place to enjoy the outdoors and all the different areas have to offer.

This time around, I wanted to experience the area during the fall with my family. The colors come alive sooner up North than they do closer to the city, and I just couldn’t resist checking it out.

Summers in Lake George: Unplugged

After an intense professional day, I needed to just unplug and be with my family. My oldest wasn’t able to join us because of a recent knee surgery, so in a way the pictures in this series which I call “Unplugged” aren’t complete, but still they captured the perfection of what happens when we have no other distractions, nothing else to do, but be together.

We started our morning early, after a night in a cabin in front of Arbutus pond in the Adirondack Park. The peace and serenity of the morning is one that can, if you are craving it as much as I was on that morning, make your eyes tear up a bit.

Romantic Getaway to Rhinebeck, NY

Things are getting a little busy here in the Cain household and all this snow hasn’t really helped much. My husband and I pride ourselves in taking time away together, but life has gotten in the way as of late.

That’s why on the one free weekend we managed to put aside for ourselves, we decided to take a short road trip to Hudson Valley for an overnight retreat. Lucky for us, it was also the warmest weekend in a long time. We ventured to Rhinebeck, NY.

Weekend at The Catskills, NY

I’m slowly realizing that I am a mountain girl. Well, ok, not really. But I want to be. My husband laughs at me because I tell him I often daydream of living in a house, near a creek, with a garden (so what that I don’t have a green thumb) and tire swing on a tree and big ol’ red pick up truck outside (so what that we have three kids who wouldn’t fit in it).

But right now, I’m just a suburbs girl, who used to be a city girl, who used to be an island girl. But I can dream. And at the very least, when I need a quick fix, I can go there. I just get in my SUV and drive two hours upstate to the Catskills in Hudson Valley.

Indulging the Foodie at Finger Lakes

I recently wrote about my girlfriend getaway to the Finger Lakes – where we had a wonderful time – and now I wanted to highlight the few places where we ate.

I have been told that Finger Lakes has quite a food scene going on, and I would have to say that based on just the few places I tried, they truly have something great going on.

There’s a lot of respect and consideration for the local farmer and purveyor of food, and the Upstate New York region has a lot to offer the foodie wanting to vacation in there. They also host an annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival (July 13-15 in 2012), and other culinary events that bring together chefs, experts and food lovers from all over.

In my trip, I got to check out individual eateries and locations that are must-sees when visiting.

Weekend Getaway to the Finger Lakes

I recently spent three days dining on delicious food, enjoying soft pastel color sunsets over serene lakes, hiking through lush green trails and prairies. No. I wasn’t in Europe, or even the West coast. I was in Upstate NY, only 5 hours out of NYC enjoying some of what the Finger Lakes area has to offer guests who visit there.

This recent trip was a wonderful reminder of the beauty NY state holds and an even more important reminder that wonderful destinations don’t have to be so far from home.

Adventures Galore at Finger Lakes, New York

The first time I heard about the Finger Lakes  in upstate New York was while sipping on one of their delicious red wines and laughing it up with one of their lovely tourism representatives – the ladies are indeed lovely, but the wine definitely helped bring on the laughter.

At first I thought it was no more than just a lovely wine area with its over 100 world class wineries, making it the country’s top wine producing regions known for its Rieslings, Gewurztraminer and Ice Wine.
