The year of road tripping

When I started blogging in 2008, I really couldn’t afford to fly anywhere…well, that, and I didn’t really want to. My kids were little and people can be real jerks to families with little kids on planes. I just never felt like it was worth it. Plus, after our cross country road trip in 2009, I realized how much easier it was to just pack up a car and go, and how much more of the in-betweens we got to enjoy.

This year I am aiming to making road tripping a bigger part of my travel. Though we have a few trips in mind that will require flying, I am most excited for our time on the road – even once we are overseas.

We aren’t done with winter just yet, but my family and I haven’t let the cold weather and snow stop us from taking day-long or weekend road trips to some of our favorite nearby destinations.

Weathering the storm with The Ultimate Survival Guide

Another storm hits the East Coast. This time it came with rain for a nice icy, chilly feel. Everything, from cars to trees to phone lines and electric cables are covered in ice.

I sit in my warm home sighing with relief that at least it didn’t cause a black out – or maybe I speak too soon.

How to travel and give to help the kids of St. Jude

Just recently I was in my kitchen making Thanksgiving dinner for my family. My house was loud. I mean, really loud. We had two more children in addition to my own, as well as their parents visiting for the holidays.  The laughter and noise of boys playing is not for the faint of heart, but I love it. Because it means everyone is happy and healthy. And that means that this holiday season, my husband and I can focus on the festivities. We’ve been very lucky in this way. Though my family experienced hard times once before, we’ve always been OK, and even when we aren’t feeling well, we have never had to experience the hardships of not being able to pay to find care for our sons.

Not being able to afford medical care when sick is something I saw my mother struggle with, and her inability to find affordable and quality healthcare allowed cancer to take her life. For as much sadness as losing my mother in this way has been for my brother and I, neither of us can imagine how much greater that pain would be were it our children. It’s a thought too painful to even fathom.

Inspiring Travel with Findery

For the past couple of months I have played around with a new app called Findery. I was approached to test it out, play with it, use it, and share what I thought. In the age of Instagram, Pinterest, and Foursquare (now Swarm), it’s difficult to imagine what another location based social media with visual capabilities could offer. With Findery you have these things, but a bit more enhanced for a better audience experience.

Protecting and Saving My Photography

Next to my desk, protected from the sun, dust, cold, and pretty much any other environmental hazard (I hope), is a malfunctioning hard drive that will no longer read the contents saved on it. In this hard drive, which I begged the Apple folks to return to me when they replaced it with a new one, are endless photos taken over a period of several months which I saved nowhere. Sounds horrifying, doesn’t it? Believe me, I type this and my hands start to tremble.

I’ve called a few tech support people who might be great at retrieving the contents, but the quote for such a task as been about $700-$800. Not an easy pill to swallow, nor cash I have readily available, thus why the hard drive still sits there, untouched, with my beautiful photos, unattainable.
