A Birthday in Disneyland, CA

One of the highlights of our 2013 summer road trip for my kids was where we were ending it: at Disneyland Resort. It was here that we chose to celebrate our middle son's 8th birthday. He waited two and a half weeks on the road for this moment and what resulted was[...]

Where Would You Go?

During my visit to Seattle, I came upon a traveler's paradise: the Metsker Maps of Seattle store. My husband, children, and I all looked at each other with excitement in our eyes. As I admired the many maps from all over the world, a question kept floating ar[...]

Taking it Easy in San Francisco, CA

Of course during our 2013 road trip, we had to stop in San Francisco, but by the time we got there we wanted nothing more than to take it slow, keep the activities to a bare minimum, and try simply to enjoy the sites without forcing ourselves into traffic - which a[...]

A Sunny Day in Portland, OR

Of all the cities we had planned during our road trip, Portland, OR was one that I was most excited about. I had never been, but envisioned cool, hip city surrounded by the lush, green environment of Oregon state. I have to confess, some of my excitement was furthe[...]

Two Days in Seattle, WA

The first stop on our summer road trip adventure was Seattle, WA. We only had two days and we meant to make the most of our time in this fun city. We set ourselves up at the Residence Inn by Marriott Lake Union, quite possibly one of the largest Residence Inn I’[...]

Tonight I enjoyed yet another stunning night in Ed Tonight I enjoyed yet another stunning night in Edinburgh, this time with an experience that took my breath away. @travisjcain again planned the most amazing night with tickets to view Love Actually with music performed by a live orchestra. Travis knows that Love Actually remains one of my favorite holiday movies of all time, and that I especially have always love composer Craig Armstrong’s scores throughout the film.

Watching the movie with the orchestra brought every scene to life in such a beautiful way…like in this powerful moment with Emma Thompson. I was in tears.

This amazing experience is hosted every holiday season at the @usherhall, and sells out quickly. I highly recommend it.

Our time in Edinburgh has left me with so much to share but at a loss for words at the same time.

Most especially, the way Travis has demonstrated his love for me throughout this trip has left me emotional. I don’t know how I got so lucky.

I hope you enjoy this moment, though I will say it is far more powerful in person. ❤️

It’s my birthday 🎉 and celebrating it here, i It’s my birthday 🎉 and celebrating it here, in Edinburgh, a city I love, with the man that I love, during the holiday season, has been nothing less than magical. And Travis arranged for the most lovely afternoon tea to further complement all the lovely experiences we’ve had thus far. The Palm Court at stunning @thebalmoral is the height of luxury, with no detailed missed. I found myself tearing up a couple of times by the experience and service, and delighted in all of it. A million Thank Yous will never suffice to my loving @travisjcain for this moment, and to The Palm Court for making this birthday one to never forget.

Be sure to check out my Scotland highlights for more on the fun we are having. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 And thank you so much for all the lovely birthday wishes and messages. 🥰

Kicking off my birthday week in one of my favorite Kicking off my birthday week in one of my favorite places in the world: Scotland, specifically Edinburgh. Though hubby is half-Scot this is his first time and I am so excited to explore this city and some of my favorite spots with him.

In true Scottish fashion the weather is rainy, but that’s to be expected and luckily there’s plenty to do to get out of it. Will share more soon. ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Seventeen. My baby boy is 17 today. ❤️ Seventeen. My baby boy is 17 today. ❤️
When our kids were little, hubby and I would feel When our kids were little, hubby and I would feel guilty and sad around this time of year because they weren’t getting the experience of a boisterous house full of family - cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents…they just got us. And for a few years it tormented us, though we always put on a happy face and worked hard to make it as special, and as memorable as possible. We have strived to give them all the love and joy we can.

And though they have delighted in the rare occasions where we share these moments with others, they have expressed, as recently as this weekend, how much more meaningful and special it is for them when it is just us. The first time they expressed these sentiments to us, years ago when they were much younger, Travis and I realized that while we wasted years being worried and stressed and guilted over not being able to give our kids that picture perfect family-filled holiday experience, we failed to appreciate how what we were giving them…just us two…was and is enough, and something they not only look forward to but are hesitant to share with others.

And they never let us forget it, lest we feel tempted to change things up. Our gatherings may be small, and it may just be us, but for our kids, it is enough and as they have expressed, “absolute perfection”.

May this give solace to those whom have chosen a happier, healthier path for their own family even if it feels smaller than most.
I am incredibly grateful to our local farmers, bak I am incredibly grateful to our local farmers, bakers, food growers, and purveyors. Their craft and labor feeds us, spoils us, and constantly treats us to good food. In preparation for Thanksgiving we picked up a seasonal, straight-out-of-the-farm box from @glennscottfarm. This box is so stocked with goodies that we will be fed for days from it. 🌱

Then we made our way to @amitycoffeeco for freshly baked pies and pastries, which made my morning easier, as everyone feasted on the pastries, and saved me so much work from not having to bake! 🥐

Everything is so, so good with the added bonus knowing we get to both support local farmers and small businesses while feasting on locally sourced and grown food. We are lucky and privileged to live in such a fruitful, beautiful place. ❤️ Shop small and support local.

Happy Thanksgiving.
