Sunday in NYC. After a night hanging out with some friends till late, one would think that the last thing I would want to do would be to go out today. However, Sunday’s in NYC are possibly my favorite day in the weekend to do stuff outside, weather permitting. It’s New York City’s “lazy day”. People are out, brunching, going to festivals, at the park, making the “feel” of the city a nice one.
Plus, I was looking forward to introducing my family, husband included, to one of my favorite NYC attractions, Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. I had been here several times before I met my husband and had babies, and I remember it being a lot of fun. Plus they have changed things up a bit more. More wax figures, more exhibits, new things to see, old things to revisit.
We headed out to Times Square in the early afternoon and entered the museum, just missing a huge crowd of tourists who followed in after us. While I got the tickets, my family was already mesmerized with the figure of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, set up in the entrance lobby.
We started our tour on the 9th floor, where the elevator opened up to an awesome ballroom, filled with celebrity figures. They are so great to look at, but the fun of the museum is being able to get close and pose with the figures. I got to cuddle with Huge Grant, chat it up with Tony Bennett, and do a booty pose with Jennifer Lopez, while my husband took the serious side with “007” Daniel Craig, and my son posed with Miley Cyrus.
I so terribly wanted to walk through the scary part of the museum, where all the horror films and dreary history characters are displayed. I started, with my 11 year old while my husband stayed with the little ones. But my 11 year old was too scared to make it through, and I didn’t have the courage to go alone. So now I have another reason to go again. I might have to go back during their After Dark event, from Oct 22-24th and Oct. 29-31st.
We saw a few more figures and displays, each floor taking us into another world of celebrities, whether it be from former and current Presidents and historical personalities, to sports and musical icons. The more displays we saw, the more we got into it as if we were meeting the personalities in real life.
The boys got to enjoy some sweets, while I belted out “Since You’ve Been Gone” for Simon (and all the visitors and tourists who stopped to watch my performance) on the American Idol stage. He was pleased! Saw the King of Pop and Lenny Kravitz lent me a shoulder to pose on.
After hanging out with Sponge Bob and unexpectedly winning an Oscar for the documentary “My Awesome Life in NYC“, I lead my family out of this fabulous museum. I feel like I could have stayed there longer than we did, sort of like I missed something…but it’s just the fact that you look at a figure, and walk away, come back, a notice something you didn’t the first time. The trip was so worth it, and I can’t wait to go again, maybe without the kids next time, so I can get a little Halloween Scare on!

I've been dying to go to this museum. So glad you guys went and had a great time. Loved the photos.

I plan on going there with my hubby (sans kids) on a weekday. I don't think my kids would enjoy it much. Looks like you guys had a blast. Enjoyed your pics.

MandieThanks Mandie! We did have a great time…and let me know how the "scary part" was! Enjoy!

I would like to take my son to the wax museum as well. How much did it cost? I know it is expensive. Did you find a discount? Also what are your thoughts on the Ripleys Believe it or not. Is it appropriate for children? That is also expensive, same question. Any other suggestions of what to do in the city, that is not too expensive is welcome. His 9 birthday is coming in February, any places to celebrate would be great.
Thanks so much! Alma

Alma PachecoHi Alma,
Thank you for your question. As for me personally, with this experience, I did not pay for all the tickets for this experience. As a reviewer I have access to some discounts, for my self. That aside, yes, it is expensive, especially for say my family (of 5). However, if you google "discounts for (enter venue here) in NYC, a slew of sites will come up that will over upto 20% discounts at time.
Most venues, like Ripley's and others in the Times Square area are a bit pricey. It's the "tourist" section of the city, so it's to be expected. So if you can take advantage of the various coupons offered online do so, they help reduce some of the costs.
Also, I like The Wax Museum more than Ripley's. If you want to try other places outside of Times Square, send me an email at carol@nycitymama.com and let me know what you and your son's interests are and I will be more than happy to provide you with other ideas : )

Wow, those wax figures are pretty awesome. Ive been in NY for about 8 years now and have yet to visit the famous Madame Tussauds. Ive gotta put that on my To Do list for 2010.

Madame Tussauds in B
I have been to London plenty of times but only been to Berlin once. I like Berlin alot more then I do London. It's cheaper, cleaner, nicer and it has more sights to visit. Love Madame Tussauds both in London and Berlin.
