Universal Studios and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter

This year has been a fun because I have been able to visit one of my favorite places in Orlando, Fl, not once, but twice! Universal Studios is by far my favorite theme park. Nothing against Disney, I see many visits to that famous destination in my future when my kids get a little older, but when it comes to parks, especially when I am not with my little ones, Universal Studios is it for me!

The first time I visited I had stayed at the Loews Royal Pacific, which meant direct access to the Universal Studios park, either via a 10 minute walk on a pretty, winding path, or via a free ferry ride along a lagoon that dropped us off right on a Citywalk port.

The park is divided into two: Universal Studios Islands of Adventures and Universal Studios Florida. Loews offers guests express passes onto rides at the parks (these passes also serve as the hotel room keys), so my oldest, who had accompanied me on the first trip, and I rode on every single roller coaster there was to ride on, as much as we could before we had to leave.

On that first trip we also got to watch The Blue Man Group perform. I expected it to be a cheesy, touristy sort of show, but it was actually pretty fun and I wouldn’t mind seeing them again. Meeting them back stage was a bonus. Not getting my white top covered in blue paint, even during photo ops: a miracle.

We did a lot on that first visit to Universal Studios. Except visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. That was because it had not opened yet, and all we got to see on our first visit was a far-off view of Hogwarts.

However on this recent trip to Orlando, I got to go and though I am not really the type to get all giddy and sappy about things, visiting this new section of Universal made me teary from excitement.

What. Too much? Well, that is NOTHING compared to the absolute fans that have been visiting the park every day since it’s opening June 18th of this year. You can find pretty much any type of Harry Potter paraphernalia your little fanatic heart desires, whether you are all about the movies or the books, it is all there. You can find the jelly beans that taste like boogers or barf, and chocolate frogs, the owls and wands, you can even order yourself a nice mug of butter beer.

Taking pictures of it all to show it here on the site was close to impossible. But it wouldn’t matter. Pictures do not do it justice. Expect to wait on long lines, especially during high tourist seasons (unless of course you have a nice VIP access pass which our group had*, but which can be purchased by visitors as well).

I had already gotten on what is now called the “Dragon Challenge” ride, but this time I rode with Tina from Carrots N Cake, who had never gotten on a roller coaster before. As fun as coaster can be, there is nothing more fun then getting on one with a Roller Coaster Virgin! My absolute favorite ride was the Harry Potter and The Forbidden Journey because before the ride even happens, you walk through the halls and stairways of Hogwarts and see a lot of the favorite places familiar to us from the movies and books. The ride itself is also a lot of fun!

Normally I wouldn’t even highlight the gift shop, except this one is pretty awesome and worth visiting.

My oldest would have totally enjoyed this experience, and he was a bit jealous when I told him I had gone. Which makes for a great excuse to re-visit. My advice: buy the two-park pass. It’s worth the money, and if in a group, it allows you to separate and focus on the rides you like.

Both parks have plenty of rides for the younger ones, though Islands of Adventures has Seuss Landing with a Cat and The Hat ride, perfect for kids 10 and under.

Oh, and make reservations to eat at Mythos. I highlighted this eatery in my Orlando Theme Park Restaurant guide, but it’s worth the repeated mention here. The food is really, really good and the service is top notch. I ordered the tomato soup again. If it’s on the menu, I will order it, no matter what the weather.

And if you get a chance to spend some time at the restaurants and bars along Citywalk, go for it. Universal Studios also hosts one of the most fun Halloween celebrations I have ever experienced on a theme park, so make sure to stop by if you are in the area around that time!

I LOVED the Harry Potter attraction and spent the bulk of our day in just that one part of the park! Of course, we didn't have the VIP pass, but using the Single Rider option allowed us to minimize the line waits. Still, there's a lot to experience.

How fun and it looks like they went all out with the new Harry Potter attraction. I love the books so it must be so cool walking in it all.

[…] I’m sure you have heard it all before. Universal Studios is one of the most fun places in Orlando, FL for families. Last time I was at Universal Studios was to check out the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. There I was, no children in tow, Butterbeer in hand, getting teary-eyed at the sight of the village of Hogsmeade and Hogwarts castle. You can see pics and read a full review of that visit here. […]

During my recent jaunt to @visittheberkshires I im During my recent jaunt to @visittheberkshires I immersed myself in @massmoca bliss. With 250,000 square feet of gallery space, it’s easy to understand how with three visits thus far, I still haven’t seen all there is to see.

Strolling the interconnected buildings and walkways leads you into a new experience, and with each ticket allowing for two consecutive day visits, you are encouraged to take your time.

Another thing to note is that in between my visits (separated by a month’s time) I got to see new installations that weren’t there before, as many of the exhibits are ever-evolving.

I have yet to visit during warmer temps, when the outdoor spaces are activated with more art and events, so am definitely excited to return. It would also be cool to catch a live performance there!

Bonus: the coffee shop adjacent to the museum - @tunnelcitycoffee - serves up some good sips, and I highly recommend reservations to @casitaberkshires, the Mexican restaurant also on campus.

This winter promises to be a snowy one and honestl This winter promises to be a snowy one and honestly, I couldn’t be more excited. Experiencing true four seasons is one of the things I love about living here because everything changes each time. The energy is more serene and mellow. The world is so chaotic and sad in many ways these days, it’s really healing to be surrounded by the quiet and stillness of nature on a snow day in the Finger Lakes.

Almost 6 months ago, and after a few months of hos Almost 6 months ago, and after a few months of hosting just family and friends at home, I launched to the public a “little something” I felt was really bringing me joy and really made others happy too…a reason to come together.

I wanted something that allowed for more in-person connections in a way that I loved to do so the most…by serving something yummy to strangers and friends alike. Café Cómodo has become more than I expected, faster than I imagined, and some of the hardest work I’ve done to date. But I love it.

And now, we’ve secured a long term partnership with @sulfurbooks, in Clifton Springs, NY.

Started January 10, 2026 and every second Saturday of the month till December 2026 (with a few extra events sprinkled in between), we will be serving a community of growing fans in a community bookstore we all adore.

I look forward to continued growth, more meaningful partnerships, and making people happy, one cafecito at a time. ☕️

Thank you to everyone who has been supportive of my little café dreams from day 1. Look what you helped make possible!!

Thank you to Sarah and team for this opportunity and to the Clifton Springs community for the warm welcome. 🫶🏾

Growing up in New York City with easy access to it Growing up in New York City with easy access to its holiday sceneries it was difficult to imagine that the holidays anywhere else could feel as special. Then later, my travels exposed me to some pretty spectacular holidays around the world that I would add as absolute musts. And now, living in rural New York, I have to say there is also something very sweet about small town holidays.

For one, the little parades that bring so many people - many of whom you get to know personally when living in a small town - are really endearing. And also, the generic commercialism doesn’t overpower the holidays because there are so many quaint small businesses to support and shop in.

And so it very much gives that Hallmark feel that so many people from the larger cities crave, especially this time of year. And while that special feeling might be lost on some, for me, it still is very much palpable and one of my favorite things about living in the Finger Lakes.

I’ve passed through Penn Station more times than I’ve passed through Penn Station more times than I can count, usually with the same mindset: get in, get out, get going. But this time I wandered into the newer Moynihan Train Hall, and for a moment the city actually felt…generous.

Sunlight spills through the skylights, the space breathes in a way old Penn never did, and then you look up - like really look - and there they are: vibrant stained-glass break dancers floating overhead, created by Kehinde Wiley. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the brilliant artist behind President Obama’s official portrait.

Here, though, it’s not about presidents or formality. It’s about movement, street culture, and the energy that makes New York what it is. A reminder that art belongs everywhere, even above a busy train platform.

If you find yourself here, give yourself the gift of a slow minute to look up above the rush.
