Trails, Haunted Houses, and Lake Surprise: Watchung Reservation

On Spring days like the ones we have been enjoying lately, it’s pretty hard to stay inside. Museums and movie theaters become difficult to endure, especially if you love the outdoors as much as we do. Being in NJ has made it so much easier to access countless hiking trails and nature paths.

Our most recent find: Watchung Reservation, in Union County, NJ, 2,000 acres of protected land with 13 miles of trails to discover.

My family and I started our tour of the area with a stop into the Visitor Center, which is also the area’s Trailside Nature and Science Center, and a great little surprise. It showcases exhibits highlighting the wildlife that can be found in the area, as well as its history, a great place to stop into before going on the trails because we were able to point out things for our kids to keep an eye out for during our walk. You can also pick up an events list (they host several) as well as a trail map here.

We took the trail along Lake Surprise, where we climbed up large fallen tree trunks, skipped rocks, and posed for photos. We hiked up to the abandoned village of Feltville, established in 1736 by an Englishman named Peter Wilcox. The village includes eight houses, a carriage house, a church, and a general house – as well as a cemetery with the remains of the first settlers to the area. There have been tales of people seeing three ghosts who roam around the houses, though lucky for us, we didn’t encounter any of them.

We ended a day of hiking and discoveries by letting the kids play in the area’s playground. Personally, I am not a big fan of playgrounds, but it was a good way for the kids to use up their last supply of energy, and as far as playgrounds go, this was a nice one.

In addition to hiking, visitors can enjoy other activities such as: horseback riding, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, outdoor ice skating, camping, and cross-country skiing.

One of the dreamiest of views for me, that I don’t think I will ever tire of, is mist over the hills and lakes. And rainy seasons like these are perfect for such moments.

After an eventful evening (and thank you all for the love and congratulatory messages🤎), I am eager to spend this rainy day back at my computer getting work done.

It’s a wonderful thing to be immersed in a region you love, and to often be tasked to share its stories with others, it’s a whole other thing when regional representatives not only notice it, but reward you for it.

To listen to others get on stage and talk about that work with such admiration and awe still feels surreal and beyond flattering. It’s overwhelming. And I am grateful beyond words, and excited to continue to do the best that I can for as long as I am welcomed and given the opportunity to do so.

So whether it is for work (@braveworldmedia) or on this page, I am happy to share the stories and many reasons why we, along with so many others, decided to make this our home. ❤️

Thanks for the support and for following along.

The coffee? Amazing of course, but Scale House brew also delish, and I was really impressed with their pizza. So if ya know, ya know. If you don’t, get over there stat. I heard it’s pretty busy during the summer months!

And make sure to stop into Overlook Coffee too. They are 😘👌🏾.

Sometimes I find country living too different and Sometimes I find country living too different and unsuitable. But then I have days that exhaust me. Or I am riddled with anxiety and uncertainty - a common theme for me as of late. Or just need to clear my head. Then I find the country to be the best medicine. Maybe it’s the crisp cold air. Or the soothing of the rushing glen. Or the sound of the ravens nesting nearby. Or the soft, cushy moss under my feet. Whatever it is, I am so grateful even when it all feels so unsure. I know this is pretty lucky.
