Last year my family and I got up early on a Sunday morning to take a cruise up the Hudson River in celebration of Oktoberfest. Granted, I am not a huge beer drinker and tend to not consume much alcohol when I am on an outing with my kids, but visiting Bear Mountain and taking in the views along the river as the foliage changes colors has become a family favorite.
There was a slight change this year from last year’s festivities as Bear Mountain is no longer hosting the Oktoberfest festivities because of the large demand. Instead, celebrations are now taking place at the nearby Anthony Wayne Recreation Area. But one can still enjoy the beautiful scenery and hiking trails, as well as the lake activities. During this event, travelers can buy drinks and German inspired food on the Circle Line boat. On Saturdays there are live bands and on Sundays there is a narrated tour of the surrounding area and pre-recorded music playing. (It’s also important to note that on Sundays there is no alcohol served until the 2.5 hour ride back to the city.) Read more about the Circle Line Bear Mountain tour.
Not having the festivities at the park itself allowed us time to explore more of the area. We arrived to the pier at 8AM for a 9AM departure and returned close to 6PM. There were no outside drinks allowed on the boat, and I would recommend bringing a blanket and wear layers if you want to sit outside to take in the views.
Here’s a photo tour of our day.
The Bear Mountain Circle Line Cruise will take place every weekend till the end of October. See website more details.
