Reflecting back on 2014, with gratitude

As I sit here amidst work documents, holiday wrapping paper, and cards from friends, my teen is at the mall where he drove himself to go holiday shopping.

This is where my life is now. No matter what else is happening around me, these changes happening in my family are what consume me and are shaping every minute of my day and my being.

It’s been an insanely, beautiful year.

My family has called this the year of France, because of the incredible amount of time I spent there. But it really was so much more than that, from family ski trips, to road trips through the desert with girlfriends, to my very fist-ever trip to Germany, Czech Republic, Prague, and Portugal. I got to visit the islands, with Samana being a return visit, and Turks and Caicos being a first. We enjoyed a few staycations along the way and I even made it to the White House!

girl gone travel _ whiskey sistersI took a road trip, in an RV, with my girlfriends, er, Whiskey Sisters!

White House travel blogger_girlgonetravelThis year, I made it to the White House!

I conquered my fears and broke through stereotypes too by driving alone cross-country through France, swimming with whale sharks, zip lining into caves, and hiking mountains!

It was a full year and in the process, our family continues to grow. I wrote about how this has felt like the year of the long goodbyes and as the college admission letters come in and my son talks about days when he will be visiting, and not living here, I feel myself change too.

I’ve always tried to be one that doesn’t take things for granted. I have so much to be grateful for. With every passing day bringing me closer to graduation, I feel like this is even more important.

I’m excited for my son, though the idea of his being gone most of the time is bittersweet. I think about my other two children, and how things will be different for them. We’re planning trips for next year and realize that chances are our oldest won’t be with us because of college obligations, and it’s not without a sense of mourning.

And all this gives me perspective of how quickly it all goes and forces me to reevaluate my priorities, because that’s what life is all about, a constant re-shifting of priorities and goals.

I felt like I really put myself out there in 2014, met many different people. Not all of them were great, but the ones I remember the most, and still talk to, are amazing and inspiring. My hope as I enter the new year is to surround myself with even more beautiful people and continue to trust my instinct and respect my time when it comes to the not so great ones. (That is a life goal).

There are big changes happening in 2015. But it seems with us, change is constant. When I started this site, I was just trying to navigate my life through New York City with babies only 18 months apart. Now I am juggling a family, a freelance career, a growing passion for photography (some of which I have managed to sell), a travel schedule, and the emotional roller coaster of preparing to send my first-born to college.

Carol Cain_Girl Gone Travel_FamilyWe started the 2014 with smiles that followed us through the year despite the few bumps along the way, including a knee surgery (my husband) as a result of an accident during this trip!

I am loving my home, my family, my time with both and I feel this will continue to shape my career and this coming year. I am so happy to do what I love and work with so many amazing people.

I am so grateful to all the readers, old and new, that continue to support me, read and follow me, and stay connected.

I am grateful to the brands and agencies that believe in what I do, support and respect what I do, and entrust me to share who they are through my own personal perspective without demands and with complete freedom. Thank you, especially to our continued partnerships into the New Year.

Thank you to Maria Bailey and Beaches Resorts (of Social Media on The Sand), TBEX, Women’s Travel Festival, New Media Expo, and Type a Parent, as well as the Adirondacks community, for giving me a stage to share my knowledge and thoughts on travel, blogging, and diversity in media.

Thank you to my Expedia Viewfinder family for your continued support and friendship. I am so incredibly proud to be among such talented, beautiful writers and people.

girl gone travel_grand canyonWhat a year!

Happy Holidays to you and yours. May this year be filled with joy, whether that is in travel or closer to home.

Is a day enough to really experience Massachusetts Is a day enough to really experience Massachusetts’ Berkshire County? Not even close. But if you needed a quick little fix of mountain air, a day trip will do.

Here were my stops on this 24 hour jaunt to the Berkshires:

📍Coffee and a morning bite at @wanderberkshires in Pittsfield, MA
📍@themountlenox author Edith Wharton’s home, for forest strolling, sculpture and flower garden admiring, and summer cottage touring - and for a light lunch in Lenox, MA.
📍Mount Greylock for a drive up to Massachusetts’ highest point (at 3,489 feet) and some epic views.
📍Dinner and drinks at @touristswelcome in North Adams.
📍Sunset views from Pontoosuc Lake near Pittsfield, MA.

On my previous visit to The Berkshires, I shared a On my previous visit to The Berkshires, I shared a phenomenal dining experience at Tourists Welcome in North Adam’s, MA.

And I have two more wonderful spots to add to my growing list….alreasy popular with those in the know, so I am just chiming in to further affirm all the accolades.

Starting with @havencafebakery in Lenox, MA. Super friendly staff, killer chai (and an awesome tea selection) and a small but delightfully seasonal menu. Felt super “homemade” in the yummy, cozy way that makes you feel nostalgic.

My mind was blown at @statefoodndrink in North Adams, MA. Come on Mondays and experience a Southern classics menu, which …zomg…so good! I cried a little inside to be missing out on their Vietnamese night (Tuesday) but promised Chef Tu Le I would be back for that and their weekend brunch 🙌🏾. The vibe is also welcoming, even for such a massive, factory space, and it felt fun with several community-focused happenings taking place in the surrounding spaces. An immediate favorite and a must on your next trip to The Berkshires!

Come with me on a little hike in the Berkshires, M Come with me on a little hike in the Berkshires, MA with no trending audio as distraction.

The Cascades Trail is an easy 2.1 mile hike in and out in the City of North Adams. We all needed a quiet little escape into the woods along a rushing brook, over a few wooden bridges and fallen foliage and towards a small cascade.

There are countless hikes for every type of adventure-seeker, but when the goal is just a stroll and a moment of connection with nature and your thoughts, there are plenty of those trails too.

And while a little escape is always nice, waking up to the stunning beauty of the place we call home is such a gift.

A message about yesterday’s event: Happy Monday A message about yesterday’s event:

Happy Monday, y’all. Woke up in time to enjoy the soft glow of sunlight that shines its way around our house in the morning, and sipped on a cafecito without being rushed for anything. So already today is a win.

Yesterday we worked our longest day yet for our little coffee cart that could (7 hours!!!) at the Heritage Fiesta in Ithaca, NY.

Though we were ready for a crowd, the reception was also unexpected because there was a popular coffee shop just steps away.

But we had Cómodo Fam stop by, family (who also fed us 🙏🏾), and soooo many members of the Latinx and BIPOC community who were just excited to see a small business like ours representing.

I want to share that we were ALL worried about potential harassment and assault by 🧊and fliers were handed out to prepare us. And you would think that it would’ve intimidated the community enough to not come out…BUT WE DID. In numbers.

And for hours that little parking lot next to Press Bay Alley was packed with all sorts of Latinx and non-Latinx community members, eating, laughing, dancing, singing, and drinking all the cafecitos and refreshers we had to offer. Literally. We went home cleaned out!

All this to say that we are all aware of the threats but we also understand the power and importance of coming together as a community and a people. By no means are we all the same, and Lord knows a lot of Latinos have a lot of self-reflecting to do based on the choices they made, but yesterday was a testament to the best of us, and I thank @yenospina and @lcatompkins for putting together such a wonderful event, for inviting @cafecomodony to be a part of it, and to all the friends, old and new, who came out to support us and la cultura.
