Road tripping with a teen driver

This is a sponsored post.

It’s road tripping season and if you are the parent of an older teen, you are probably getting the requests to let them drive. I know I am. Almost daily, but especially when planning our road trips.

My teen will be getting his license in just two months, when he turns 17, and ever since he got his permit he wants to drive everywhere.

As we take one road trip season, he is more than happy to volunteer his services. Of course it’s freaking me out, but I know that during this time, when he is restricted to driving with us, it’s crucial he learns the Dos and Don’ts of the road.

The Gift of Photography with SONY NEX-5T

When I joined the Sony Club last year, I was given a new camera. The Sony NEX 5R is much lighter than my Canon Rebel, the camera I had used since day one of my blogging career. It had apps and filters that made taking photos a lot more interesting and fun in an easier way.

I tried it out in San Diego, then nervously I left my Canon home and took my new camera on assignment in France. I say nervously because I wasn’t sure if this little camera would deliver in quality or capture the images in a way that would make me happy. Turns out that I really had nothing to fear. I photographed Bordeaux, St. Emilion, andBergerac all with my , and haven’t stopped using it since.

Ask The Experts: Traveling on a Budget

As you know, I am always looking for ways to travel with my family. Our entire year is made up of juggling and balancing of schedules, school holidays, sports activities, and social engagements.

As our boys get older it gets a bit more complicated, but it also gets more expensive. Now, everyone needs a carry on or check in bag. We have to consider the cost of a larger vehicle rental as well as the purchase of seats for 5. Restaurant, hotels, and activities costs are also higher. In short, taking that trip is not easy to budget.

But we do. Because it’s important for us to make it happen for our family, for our memories, and for our own love of discovery. There are a lot of ways to budget for travel and we’ve mastered many ways in doing so.

Of course, as life changes, so does our approach, but some things stay the same and for us, have become a bit easier to do. This is why I am excited to partner with Cricket Wireless in their “Ask The Experts” series to discuss Traveling on a Budget.

Talking Travel Photography with SONY Artisan of Imagery, Brian Smith

I am by no means a tech geek. I mean, I love tech and gear and can get pretty geeky over some stuff, but I am far too ignorant about a very many things on the subject to even claim the title. But I do love it and if it is easy to use and delivers in quality, I am all over it. My participation in the Sony Club was a wonderful investment in that I had access to a lot of the latest gear and tech and learned tons from the incredible professionals that formed the group along with me. One of my favorite cameras to date is the Sony NEX 5r, which has since been upgraded to the Sony NEX 5TL, and which has become the camera I use for all my photos. Anyone who has seen me on the road knows how much I love this little camera and the images I get from it. The video below was taken with this 5r.

I am becoming more and more obsessed with photography and it has become such an important part of my story telling and travel sharing that I am always looking out for what is happening in the photography world. But, of course, the more I see available out there, the more I think I need to improve. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed and worst yet, to spend tons of money that you don’t really need to spend.

There are many things that made our West Coast road trip so much fun, but one of the things that really allowed us to enjoy ourselves, and the road was the comfort and confidence we had in our GMC Yukon Denali luxury SUV. Thanks to the generous sponsorship from OnStar, we drove the vehicle from Seattle to Los Angeles completely content with our reliable, and pretty massive ride.

Driving The 2014 Subaru Forester

I recently borrowed a 2014 Subaru Forester. This is my review.

I ventured out to the Jersey Shore in the middle of a tropical storm. It wasn’t the worst the shore had seen, but it was still a pain to drive in. Have you ever driven in New Jersey? Not a lot of fun…and I’m from New York! Let’s just say that rain and NJ drivers don’t mix, and I was a little nervous. To top it all off, I was driving a brand spanking new 2014 Subaru Forester, on loan.

Gorgeous vehicle, a little too small for my family of 5, but still spacious enough to for a family with one less kid. The trunk is also pretty spacious trunk and the backseat had a nice amount of leg room.

Two NJ Beaches, Two NJ Experiences: From Belmar to Atlantic City

This travel post is part of a host agreement.

A couple of weekends ago I headed out to join a group of fellow bloggers to give New Jersey beaches a shout out. Weather-wise it wasn’t the best weekend. We’ve been experiencing lots of rain lately, and though I was hoping for some serious beach time, Mother Nature had her own plans.

Nevertheless, I joined the group, made up of bloggers who are part of the Social Media Moms and New Jersey Digital Moms groups, and under the #JerseyLove hashtag shared information on Belmar, NJ, one of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy, as well as Caesars Palace and Atlantic City, not as hard hit by Sandy, but affected by the media’s misrepresentation of the damage to their boardwalk area – which was close to none in comparison to other areas of the Jersey coast, affecting their tourism.

Gift Ideas for The Female Traveler

Though I don’t normally do gift guides, and there’s no guarantee that I ever will again, I often come across gift ideas that I just must share with you. I am hesitant to call the following gift guide one specifically for moms, because as I see it, it is perfect for pretty much any female traveler I can think of  – mom or not, new to travel or pro (and some even more so for men). They put a smile on my face and I think they are great gifts that go to the soul of the traveler.
