The Market Place in Asheville, NC

During my last trip to Asheville, NC, I made it a point to check out at least of few favorite local eateries since I missed out on the experience before.

I was delighted that my first experience would be The Market Place, headed by Chef /Owner William Dissen. The Market Place is known for its farm-to-table concept, something that was established by its previous owner, Chef Mark Robenstein and is carried out still and continually improved by Chef Dissen.

In speaking with Chef Dissen during my visit, his passion and commitment to stay local were clear even if, he admitted, this required more time and attention to guarantee that what he serves his guests is the best the local farmers and food purveyors have to offer. But, he also added, it helps build and solidify his relationships with local farmers, people he relies on to always keep him informed and connected with the very best there is, which he can then help bring to the table for our enjoyment.

The restaurant was undergoing a slight renovation when I visited, but the bones of the place were pretty impressive and made for a relaxing, comfortable environment. Various local artistic pieces are seen throughout, either hanging on the wall, or off of light fixtures. One can see that Chef Dissen, originally from West Virginia, has embraced the beauty, people, and overall community of Asheville.

The service was friendly and personal. Our waiter was not only very much committed to delivering the best service, but had a great amount of knowledge about every dish he served us. A waiter that is passionate about the food he serves is a rarity indeed, and a huge compliment to any dining experience to say the least.

I did not get enough of The Market Place. The food was incredibly prepared, fresh and of course, perfectly in season. All items on the menu are gathered from within 100 miles of the restaurant and changes quite regularly to meet the supply that is available and attainable. Which makes it more exciting to think that a regular visit would feel like a new one each time.

I highly encourage a visit to Asheville, NC in general. Such a beautiful destination and while there, take a moment to enjoy the experience that is The Market Place. I love what they are doing both in and out of the kitchen, and applaud Chef Dissen and his team for staying true to what this Asheville staple has stood for over the years.

I had a wonderful butterfish at The Market Place after you recommended it to me. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a solo meal while talking to the bartender who was refreshingly honest about the wine list and the right pairing for my fish. I'm already dreaming about my return trip to Type A so I can go again! Thanks for the wonderful recommendation!

Have you ever been to a shop so pretty and cozy it Have you ever been to a shop so pretty and cozy it makes you emotional? In NYC, @niconeco_zakkaya is up there as a fave for me.

This Japanese-inspired stationary boutique in the East Village gives me all the fuzzy feels and I was sad to hear that after 8 years unharmed, their charming shop sign was vandalized.

They are calling on a creative illustrator who might be interested in bringing a new one to life. Check their Insta for more. And as always, support, shop, and give all the love to small businesses wherever you live and your travels may take you. And next time you are in the East Village, go check them out, and their cafe in Williamsburg, @loafonpaperny (see my reel on them). My 🫶🏾 to this little shop.

Rode the ferry a few minutes from Dumbo to Williamsburg for a stroll and some delicious coffee.

Walked through Domino Park and into @birdeenyc, where I just had to taste a few of their delicious pastries and churro latte!

Then strolled over to @loafonpaperny and shopped for some pretty stationary goodies while sipping on their Earl Grey Matcha.

The perfect way to kick off a stunning day in the city!

My list of fave cafes continues to grow, and I am saving them in my “NY Cafes” highlights for those who are following along. ☕️

Healing my soul with people I love while trekking Healing my soul with people I love while trekking through glens in search of an eternal flame. 🔥

This hike, in Chestnut Ridge Park, near Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo, NY, is a moderate, 1.5-mile round trip (more or less) that takes you on forest trails, with some stairs, and creek walking; so definitely bring waterproof shoes with grip. This popular spot can get crowded, but if you’re lucky enough to have a solo experience like we did (because of rain), it’s pretty magical.
The most perfect date night in the most perfect li The most perfect date night in the most perfect little bistro in the most perfect New York destination. No, not NYC. The Finger Lakes.

The entire experience at @deanlanedining felt so incredibly elevated and special, and some might even say unexpected, especially from a farmhouse in rural Dundee, NY.

Husband and wife team, Michael and Lisa Dean create a wonderful farm-to-table prix fix menu, beautifully paired with wines selected by Sommelier @danbrezinsky, who, for as long as the moment allows, further complements the first tastings with a sharing of his deep knowledge and passion for the Finger Lakes wines he serves. The individual pairings per course (4) are optional but I do highly recommend as they influenced each dish and in some cases, my opinion of certain wines.

The vibe is intimate and personally, I enjoyed the early seating as I got to admire the sunset through the large dining room windows throughout my time there.

Their highly coveted B&B is fully booked for 2026, but reservations are open for limited seating at the restaurant, with menus changing weekly.

An absolute highlight, and a must during your visit to the Finger Lakes!
