Singing at The Apollo with Tyrese and Other Crazy Dreams Come True

Ok. Let me clarify: I didn’t sing with actor, singer Tyrese Gibson – at the same time – but he performed on the same stage, on the same night that I performed at the Apollo’s Amateur Night.

At the time I was a single mom, and too old already to be seriously considered by any producer or talent agent. The prize for winning the Apollo’s Amateur Night competition – at least this particular one – was the consideration from a record label. I was already hitting 30, and not really on the top of what those in the industry consider “marketable”. This was before American Idol, or America’s Got Talent, or even You Tube.

But I went for it anyway. I stood in the long line of applicants. I waited for hours to audition. I waited in anticipation for news about having made the cut to compete, and I competed all because I wanted to be able to give myself the chance to live a dream.

Sometimes you just have to do things in life, knowing that chances are nothing more will come of it all other than that personal fulfillment that follows. We all have a list of dreams tucked away in our back pocket, but not all of us will pursue them.

Sometimes, when you do, you will receive no reward, no accolades, no recognition, praise or love. People won’t remember it, or care. But you will. Like me, you will know that despite it all you got on the stage and gave it your all because it was your dream to do so.

I didn’t win a tangible prize that night. I made it to the final cut, but lost to a young girl who sang Whitney Houston’s “Greatest Love of All” (I sang En Vogue’s rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Giving Him Something He Can Feel”).

But more than 10 years later I still smile at the pictures and I still remember the chills to have stood on that stage, and have one of the toughest crowds in all the world cheer me and applaud.

Most importantly I fulfilled a dream. I have gone to realize other crazy dreams since, from giving love a second chance to becoming a travel blogger, and I couldn’t be happier.

What crazy dreams do you have tucked away waiting to be pursued?

As I always say, the adventure is yours for the taking, so what are you waiting for?

Have you ever been to a shop so pretty and cozy it Have you ever been to a shop so pretty and cozy it makes you emotional? In NYC, @niconeco_zakkaya is up there as a fave for me.

This Japanese-inspired stationary boutique in the East Village gives me all the fuzzy feels and I was sad to hear that after 8 years unharmed, their charming shop sign was vandalized.

They are calling on a creative illustrator who might be interested in bringing a new one to life. Check their Insta for more. And as always, support, shop, and give all the love to small businesses wherever you live and your travels may take you. And next time you are in the East Village, go check them out, and their cafe in Williamsburg, @loafonpaperny (see my reel on them). My 🫶🏾 to this little shop.

Rode the ferry a few minutes from Dumbo to Williamsburg for a stroll and some delicious coffee.

Walked through Domino Park and into @birdeenyc, where I just had to taste a few of their delicious pastries and churro latte!

Then strolled over to @loafonpaperny and shopped for some pretty stationary goodies while sipping on their Earl Grey Matcha.

The perfect way to kick off a stunning day in the city!

My list of fave cafes continues to grow, and I am saving them in my “NY Cafes” highlights for those who are following along. ☕️

Healing my soul with people I love while trekking Healing my soul with people I love while trekking through glens in search of an eternal flame. 🔥

This hike, in Chestnut Ridge Park, near Orchard Park, a suburb of Buffalo, NY, is a moderate, 1.5-mile round trip (more or less) that takes you on forest trails, with some stairs, and creek walking; so definitely bring waterproof shoes with grip. This popular spot can get crowded, but if you’re lucky enough to have a solo experience like we did (because of rain), it’s pretty magical.
The most perfect date night in the most perfect li The most perfect date night in the most perfect little bistro in the most perfect New York destination. No, not NYC. The Finger Lakes.

The entire experience at @deanlanedining felt so incredibly elevated and special, and some might even say unexpected, especially from a farmhouse in rural Dundee, NY.

Husband and wife team, Michael and Lisa Dean create a wonderful farm-to-table prix fix menu, beautifully paired with wines selected by Sommelier @danbrezinsky, who, for as long as the moment allows, further complements the first tastings with a sharing of his deep knowledge and passion for the Finger Lakes wines he serves. The individual pairings per course (4) are optional but I do highly recommend as they influenced each dish and in some cases, my opinion of certain wines.

The vibe is intimate and personally, I enjoyed the early seating as I got to admire the sunset through the large dining room windows throughout my time there.

Their highly coveted B&B is fully booked for 2026, but reservations are open for limited seating at the restaurant, with menus changing weekly.

An absolute highlight, and a must during your visit to the Finger Lakes!
